Which Comes First: Relationship or the kids?

February 13, 2008 | 4 Comments

p1010009.JPG My first marriage was all about the kids. Our relationship died and today we connect ONLY around kid issues, and not too often at that. Second time around, I’m squarely focused on making the relationship not only work, but sing. Although I haven’t said that directly to the kids, somehow they seem to know and respect that.

That desire to see our marriage as a ‘work in progress’, to actively seek the input of others, and continually ask the hard questions led me to create my new blog, www.thismarriagething.com. I may be wrong, but I think everyone can benefit from talking about this complex, evolving thing called marriage.

So, where do you put your faith, time and energies: your spouse or kids?

Test tubes Maybe not. Did you know that sperm can be created from a female embryo? It can. That means that lesbians may be able to have their own biological children. More interesting, I wonder if men will be come extinct.

The op ed article in the Boston Metro Tuesday put that thought in my head by suggesting that women might not need men anymore (sorry-no link available). Women can take out the garbage. Mow the lawn. Balance the checkbook. We can make our own babies (using technology), and even that is evolving. The last argument for why men are useful might be gone. Kinda reminds me of the Laurel and Hardy movie where they landed on a planet of only women- remember that?

My swubby- that’s sweet hubby- is invaluable to me for many reasons. And, none of those reasons include his genetic pool.

Is your spouse essential and why?
