Relationship Memoir in 6 Words

June 27, 2008 | 46 Comments

Could you define your entire life in six words? I find that idea so mind-boggling yet annoyingly seductive. How would you do it, and if you did, what could you really say? That’s a fun thing to noodle about especially at 3 a.m. when you have insomnia. (uh, that might be just me). Read more

Forgive, of course. Forget…uh, never.

Image credit: Geoffrey Holman Last week we had our big annual summer bash which brings together all the friends we don’t get to see during the year. It’s tremendous fun and something thought-provoking always comes out of those late-night, Heineken fueled discussions.

We got around to talking about relationships (naturally) and the Sex in the City movie came up. I don’t mind saying it was a disappointment to me. The conclusion was too neat, and for two characters, Samantha and Miranda, too much out of character. What really puzzled me was the advice the therapist gave to Steve and Miranda: forgive and forget. Baloney! Read more

What Does Your Mother-in-Law Think of You?

June 20, 2008 | Leave a Comment

Image credit: Alan Goulet It’s been a wild couple of days. My daughter graduated from high school last week so I’ve been up to my ears in preparations for her as well as hosting my Mom. Naturally, all that extra stress made me a bit sharp with my swubby. We actually had two fights in front of her. Nothing big, but we were both snapping about little things like my driving and his procrastinating. Read more

Image credit: Steve Miriric The first time I visited my swubby’s family vacation house in Vermont it was quite an experience. Not because I fell out of an apple tree and almost broke my ankle. (I couldn’t resist climbing to the top to get the big ones). Or, because it was a full family press- his 5 siblings and their families were all in attendance for the annual cider pressing. Although I admit that I was overwhelmed by all the activity, noise and general chaos. No, what really amazed me was hearing my brother-in-law,, Stan, snore. Read more

Have we failed to teach our children enough about marriage?

June 13, 2008 | 2 Comments

2couples.jpg I’m privileged to be surrounded by smart, thoughtful people over at the This Marriage Thing Group I run on tbd.com , a relaxing community where people truly connect. Not only do these wonderful folks indulge me by answering my sometimes bizarre, oft-times challenging questions about love and marriage, they contribute their own excellent questions. Milt, who is filled with keen insights and wisdom and one of my favorite contributors (I’ve asked him repeatedly to married me), shared the following question:

Happy Loving Day!

June 12, 2008 | Leave a Comment

Today is a celebration for all families, especially those that are interracial. Loving Day celebrates the legalization of interracial couples. Just a scant 41 years ago, marrying someone outside of your race was a criminal offense. Let that sink in a minute. How ridiculous and sad. Read more

Are You a Love Snob?

June 11, 2008 | 2 Comments

youngboomercouple2.jpg Lunching at a local Italian restaurant with my friend, Meryl, I could tell she had more on her mind than how to get dessert and stay on her diet. I love Meryl because she is a bundle of energy wrapped in skin. When she sets her mind to something, whether is righting a wrong or getting a good deal, it gets done. Case closed. When she’s happy you know it, and when she’s not, you wanna be in another state. I could tell from her lovely face, typically so animated, that she was upset. Read more
