How About Renewing Your Marriage License just like your car registration?

Image credit: k. dmitry Today, I visited my neurologist and learned I haven’t lost any more marbles, but you probably can’t prove that by talking with my family or reading this blog.

Dr. Arturo makes Dr. McDreamy seem pedestrian. He’s handsome, of course. Charming and unfailingly polite. What makes him irresistible to me, and his wife I’m sure, is his sexy Argentine accent….he’s very, uh, yummy. Anyway, while we were chit-chatting he mentioned something at that really caught my attention. According to him, there’s a push in Germany for renewable marriage licenses.

Saying I Do, I Do I DO

Those of you who know me, know I never met a wedding I didn’t like. I had TWO for heavens sake and plan at least two more in the next fifty years. I think that the very act is an opportunity to reflect and recommit. In good times and bad mean something different when you’re asked a second and third time.

Needless to say, this idea totally makes sense to me. It seems that a German politician is lobbying to make a marriage license renewable, just like your fishing license. Here’s the original article in German- there’s translate sites online if you want to read it word for word.

The divorce rate in this country was astronomical. According to USA Today both the divorce and marriage rate are declining. Turns out that the folks who would get married just live together and avoid the financial and emotional costs of divorce.

So, why do we insist people stay married when it’s not right for them or ultimately for the state. You do know that marriage was originally created as a financial convenience, right? Since those early days, women can own property, make money and generally take care of themselves. Moral issues aside, marriage is not longer entirely necessary. I’m still in favor, but why make it the proverbial ball and chain?

I found several blogs that advocate making a marriage license renewable. Read the articles and let’s discuss. Just think how many lives, especially children’s lives, could be made better if our society didn’t stigmatize parting ways.

Just Like the Phoenix

I’m not advocating either of these points of view. Honestly, I’m still deciding. Over the year, I’ve come to believe there should be a test to get married like the drivers test we administer to teenagers. Heaven knows, a bad marriage is even more dangerous than a two ton vehicle.

Ok, people….discuss.
